When you’re a photographer who spends most of your time capturing the beauty and strength of others, it’s a special moment when you step in front of the camera. I had the incredible opportunity to do just that during a brand shoot with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).
As someone who has been partnering with NBCF since 2018, this shoot wasn’t just about creating promotional content – it was about deepening a meaningful partnership that’s already helped raise much needed funds for breast cancer awareness, research and support.
Trading Places: From Photographer to Subject
On February 21 2025, the team at NBCF invited me to attend a photoshoot.
There’s always a vulnerability that comes with being on the other side of the camera, but the NBCF team’s warmth and professionalism made the experience both comfortable and empowering.
The irony wasn’t lost on me – I spend my days helping women feel confident and beautiful during their portrait sessions, and now I was experiencing those same butterflies!
But just like I tell my clients, those nerves quickly transformed into excitement as we began capturing images that would help tell our shared story.
A Partnership with Purpose
My journey with NBCF began in 2018 and it has become one of the most rewarding collaborations of my career.
Every day in Australia, nine women lose their lives to breast cancer – a statistic that has touched so many of us personally through our mothers, sisters, friends, and loved ones.
This sobering reality is what inspired my “Uplifted: A Celebration of Women” project. Participants of the project have generously made a donation to take part. Through complimentary portrait sessions for women aged 35-60+, we’ve created a movement that celebrates resilience, beauty, and the perfectly imperfect journey of womanhood while raising funds for vital breast cancer research.
The fruits of this project – two published volumes of “Uplifted: A Celebration of Women” – are now available worldwide on Amazon, with proceeds supporting NBCF’s important work.
Behind Every Portrait, A Story
During the brand shoot, we had the chance to share stories of the remarkable women who have participated in the Uplifted project.
Women who have overcome health challenges, navigated difficult life transitions, or simply embraced the opportunity to celebrate themselves while supporting a worthy cause.
The NBCF team were particularly moved by how the portrait experience transforms women – how a few hours in the studio can help someone reconnect with their strength and beauty, especially during or after challenging times.
